Directions for Cincinnati TOP Soccer

  1. Flyer Distribution in Schools: It is vital that we do not distribute flyers on a school by school basis, but rather a district-wide basis. Identify the names of each district in your assigned area, then follow the steps below.

  2. Call the district’s administrative office and ask to speak to the director of Special Education.
  3. Introduce yourself as part of Cincinnati TOP Soccer, the soccer league for children with mental and physical disabilities. Let them know about your program (they are key people to educate about our program!) Some facts to share:

    • We are in our 8th year, with over 200 players

    • We have 3 practice and game locations, with a desire to add more.

    • We are part of US Youth Soccer Assn; the national body of youth soccer. There are now TOPS programs in all 50 states.

  4. Ask their permission to distribute a flyer to the children in Special Ed. Explain that the program is for children who are in physical and/or occupational therapy; not for children with only learning disabilities or ADD. This is also the first year that we are welcoming children in wheelchairs (let them know that!). Find out how many children fit the profile in the district.

  5. They will most likely say “That’s fine with me, but you need to get it approved by the Superintendent’s office.” Get the fax number of the Superintendent and the name of the contact person (probably the Superintendent’s secretary)
  6. Fax the flyer to the Superintendent’s office and be sure to include a number for them to call you back once approved.
  7. After receiving permission, take the flyers to the Special Ed Director and be certain that they get in their hands. Remind them once again as to whom the flyers should go to. Also, we have a limited number of color large flyers to hang in office bulletin boards. See if there is a spot in the district that could use one. (More can be printed from the web page).

Note: Some schools will require you to sort the flyers yourself by school or even by teacher. Some may even require that you take them personally to each school. This can be a pain, but at least we know that they are making it to each school.

  8. Follow up a week later if you saw no proof that the flyers were distributed.
  9. Let whomever gave you the flyers know of your accomplishment. Give them the names of each person you spoke to, along with phone and fax numbers, so next year it will be a smoother process.
